With the goal of providing a welcoming atmosphere for women ages 18 and up who want to learn outdoor skills, Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) offers fall and spring weekend workshops.
Participants choose from standard classes and specialty offerings ranging from Fish Fillet 101 and Wild Game Field Dressing to Trailering Basics and Outdoor Survival.
Workshops are held in different locations throughout the state. The spring 2026 workshop was held in Granbury, and the fall 2026 workshop will be in Brownwood. Learn more about the organization and upcoming workshops on Facebook.
The lessons and camaraderie continue long after the workshops have ended. Throughout the state, several BOW alumnae have formed Texas Outdoors-Woman Network, or TOWN, groups. “During the summer we kayak every other Friday at various lakes,” says Sally Loehrer, president of the East Texas chapter.
“Our fall camping schedule includes Lake Catherine State Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Mission Tejas State Park in Grapeland, and Caddo State Park in Karnack.
“Some of our members love to hike, some bicycle, some kayak, some fish, some geocache, and some just like to enjoy the fellowship of shared meals, the campfire, and a starry sky,” Sally says.
“We camp in tents, park shelters, cabins, RVs, and camping trailers. In years past, some of our members have backpacked various Texas trails, staying out on the trail for several days at a time.”
The East Texas group can be reached by emailing East Texas Town. For more information on other TOWN groups, visit the Texas Parks & Wildlife website.
